Abstract : The present study has been designed to investigate deictic expressions in scientific and artistic texts using a monolingual corpus. Its focus is on possible differences in the use of deictics in both texts. The analysis intends to combine qualitative (discourse analytic) and quantitative (corpus linguistic) perspectives by utilizing a Persian monolingual corpus. In the present study, 35 scientific texts and 35 artistic texts were chosen for the analysis. The frequency of all deictic expressions of these texts were determined and analyzed based on the functions they perform in their related context. The T-Test computed using the MATLAB software has been applied to check the statistical results of this study. The results indicate that deictic expressions are more frequent in artistic texts than in scientific texts. There are four reasons to account for this finding: First, deictics show the most textual cohesion in artistic texts. Second, deictics figure the high degree of complexity and abstractness in artistic texts. Third, the high frequency of deictics in artistic texts is due to the high degree of synonyms in object, temporal, and spatial deictics. Finally, they are utilized as an instrument for increasing explicitness, a communication strategy which is customary in artistic texts but not in scientific texts..
