Abstract	:	Critical discourse analysis is a powerful tool that can be used to explore the representation of political issues and their main participants and actions in newspaper articles. This study intended to investigate the picture drawn by Western media of the popular contemporary uprising in Egypt and to critically analyze the related discourse. The analytical tools developed by Tuen A. Van Dijk (1998b) were used to examine the headlines and the contents of news stories on Egypt's uprising published by two American newspapers. Articles from The New York Times and The Washington Post were selected to explore the picture they sketched of this event. How "we" and "they" were dealt with and represented as major concepts in the analysis of the discourse of this event was the central focus of the study. The analysis of the data showed frequent negative terms for "them" such as fresh violence, riot police, sporadic looting, chaos, escalating crisis, etc. and positive terms for "us" such as justice, supporting, worried about the chaos, free and fair, balancing, sympathy, etc. The findings contribute to the understanding of the ideological role of journalistic language in constructing representations of political events.
