Abstract : The occurrence of shifts in any translational activity is an unavoidable phenomenon hence the purpose of this study was to find the most common J.C Catfords class shifts in the Persian Translation of The Sound and the Fury. The objectives of this study however are to find the areas in which Persian is different from English and to pave the way for future studies which are to formulate manners for translating from Persian into English. To achieve that two translations of the book, The Sound and the Fury, were compared with the original text in order to find which class shifts occur more in Persian translation and investigate in details the differences between two languages. The results showed that pronouns are those which change more in Persian translation. They are more likely to be translated as nouns in Persian. Then verbs tended to be translated as nouns in Persian. Other forms of class shifts occurred rarely in Persian translation of the English text. Keywords: Translation, Shift, Class, Class shift, Equivalence, Part of speech.
