Abstract : This study aimed to explore the function and the frequency of the metadiscourse markers (MDMs) in scientific English and Persian texts .Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the textual and interpersonal markers characterizing the selected genre, different textbooks written in English and Persian were analyzed to identify the metadiscourse categories used in these texts and to determine the sociopragmatic differences existing in these languages. The findings suggested that both textual and interpersonal MDMs were present in English and Persian texts, but they differed in the frequency of occurrence and these respective of MDMs. The results revealed that a large number of metadiscourse elements permeated both English and Persian texts. Among the different metadiscourse markers used, textual markers (TMs) were the most frequently employed categories in both languages. However, the contrastive comparison between English and Persian texts revealed that the frequency of textual MDMs was greater than the interpersonal markers (IMs) in Persian texts. Regarding the IMs, texts written by Persian and English writers employed less TMs. But the contrastive rhetoric analysis indicated that English writers used IMs two times more than those utilized by Persian writers. It was concluded that such discrepancy could be attributed to the rate of explicitness in two languages. Persian writers were more interested in explicating their ideas for readers through the text via the use of TMs , by contrast , English writers applied a large number of IM categories especially hedges to establish rapport with their readers . It was further found that different factors may influence the use of MDMs; namely, the culture, the writer's preferences and the text genre..
