Abstract : The present study aimed to investigate the possible impacts of topic familiarity and passage sight vocabulary on lexical inferencing and recall of Iranian EFL students. The participants were60 university students aged 23-30 who were divided into two groups of intermediate and advanced based on the results obtained from an Oxford Placement Test. Lexical inferencing abilities of the students were assessed through four cloze passages, two familiar and two unfamiliar for the students. Then obtained scores were correlated to find out whether familiarity with the text had any impact on lexical inferencing or not. In addition, passage sight vocabulary test was administered to assess the students' knowledge of the words existed in four passages. The scores obtained from passage sight vocabulary test and lexical inferencing test were correlated to see the relationship between these variables. Thereafter, a lexical recall test was administered to examine the students' recall of lexical items with regard to more familiar and less familiar passages. Then the results were correlated in order to find out whether topic familiarity and passage sight vocabulary had any effect on lexical inferencing and retention of Iranian EFL university students or not. The results revealed the robust effects of topic familiarity and passage sight vocabulary on lexical inferencing abilities. In addition, the results underscored the importance of topic familiarity and passage sight vocabulary knowledge on improving lexical recall.
