Abstract	:	The Automated Door Attendant, a multimodal interactive system functioning as avirtual secretary for a professor, is an example of an artificial agent deployed in a roletypically assigned to humans. Accepting both speech and touch as input, it servesas an appointment scheduler, a document browser, a videoconferencing client, anda video answering-machine for visitors. This thesis provides an analysis of existingmultimodal kiosk systems, describes the evolution of the current system's design, andpresents the results of an empirical user study..
