Abstract	:	A new distortion measure for audio coding is proposed, posed as a distance measure on the spaceof excitation patterns. We investigate the psychoacoustic properties of the measure, as well as theimplementation issues that arise under a constrained-distortion coding structure. Experimentalresults show that the excitation distortion metric produces higher-quality coded files than theusual Noise-to-Mask ratio measure, at the same rate..
