Abstract	:	The oil sands deposits of northern Alberta are providing more than IS percent ofCanedays petroleum requirement. To meet this demand, the modified Clark Hot WaterExtraction Process (IHWEP) is used to recover bitumen from surface mineable oil sands.The critical step in the extraction of bitumen fkom oil sands is its separation from theparticulate mineral components during a conditioning step. Traditional, simple orecharacterisation methods, such as measurements of fines (< 45 pm)) and clay (< 2 pm),are not always effective in predicting operational problems in this process..
