Abstract	:	As all optical network architectures evolve to include very high speed packet based traific,fiber optic receivers will need to operate in so-called "burst mode." Burst mode trafficis temporally asynchronous and will exhibit variation in received optical power. From aspectral point of view, this tr&c contains a great deal of low frequency and DC content. Thisimposes the disadvantage that all of receiver electronics be DC-coupled. This thesis proposesthe use of an optical modified duobinasy precoder at the input of a balanced photoreceiver,This technique then permits the receiver electronics to be AC-coupled because the modifiedduobinary waveform has no spectral content at DC. AC-coupled receivers which would beeasier to design, could then be used for multi gigabit per second burst mode optical access..
