Abstract	:	Webhandling machinery abound in industries that process long, thin material such as film, paper,textiles and even thin metals. All the processing is done as the material is rewound into a roU.Closed loop control is required to regulate the line (web) speed, and the tension of the web in thevarious processing stations. These specif. -,' ions are met using actuators that essentially "pulln onthe web to create the desired tension. Until recently, indugtry has relied exclusively on the classicalPID controller that is tuned online by aa operator.This thesis takes a novel approach-it studies the applicability of recent advances in optimal fre-quency domain control techniques, namely H, control, to web processing. Various models of thewinding process are developed and used to design N, controllers. These are experimentally verifiedon an industrial machine at the University of Toronto..
