Abstract
:
The problem of interleaving transmitted symbols over fading channels is investigated.Clarke's model is used to simulate a correlated flat fading channel. The performance ofblock interleaved convolutional codes is studied in terms of bit and word intaleavers andtheir equivalent super channels. It is shown that a bit interleaved channel can be representedin terms of a super channel of equivalent Doppler spread. Performance of various interleavedconvolutional codes is compared to those of non-interleaved turbo-like codes in a correlat-ed fading environment. SimuIation results indicate that under stringent delay constraintssuch as voice co~unications, interleaved convolutional codes outperform t u b d i k e codes.However at more relaxed delay constraints of a few thousand bits, non-interleaved turbo-likecodes are capable of outperforming convotutioad codes..
