Abstract : The objective of this research is to develop a turn-key system that is able to interface withthe FLIR ThermaCAM S60 infrared camera and automatically capture and analyze defects ininfrared images of FRP bridge decks. Infrared thermography is one of the nondestructiveevaluation (NDE) techniques that are being used to locate defects (debonds and delaminations) inbridge components. It is a rapid data collection and interpretation technique having highsensitivity and reliability. Analysis of infrared images by human interpretation is dependent onthe users knowledge and hence introduces ambiguity in the defect detection processThis thesis investigates the use of an automated defect detection system to locate defectsin infrared images of FRP bridge decks to eliminate/reduce human intervention. Air-filled andwater-filled debonds were inserted between the wearing surface and the underlying FRP deck.Also, simulated subsurface delaminations (of various sizes and thickness) were created at theflange-to-flange junction between two FRP deck modules. Infrared thermography was used tocapture an image of these FRP bridge decks under various heating and cooling methods, distancevariations etc. A turn key system developed as a part of this research was able to interface withthe infrared camera, capture infrared images and analyze them for defects automatically. Theeffect of these conditions on the accuracy of the automated defect detection algorithms wasassessed.Limitations of using a single image to assess the physical location of the defect on theentire bridge deck were observed. Mosaicking of a sequence of infrared images to form aب‍composite imageپ mosaic was suggested. The mosaic will be a single image representation ofthe area covered by all the infrared images combined.
