Abstract : Modern semiconductor technology has made it possible for conventional analogAutomatic Voltage Regulators to be replaced with digital technology to provide low costcontrol solutions for robust regulation with added functionality. The thesis investigatesthe technical difficulties associated with implementation of digital control and describesthe development of a Digital Voltage Regulator (DVR) used in alternator products. TheDVR uses Delta-sigma control to eliminate limit cycling that occur at frequencies lowerthan the switching frequency in digitally controlled PWM (DPWM) converters. Theadvantages of using Delta Sigma over Dithering or sophisticated hardware with highresolution is clearly illustrated. The complete system is modeled and simulated inSimulink. The simulation results confirm the elimination of limit cycles using delta sigmatechnique.
