Abstract : Efficient design and implementation of wireless sensor networks has become ahot area of research in recent years, due to the vast potential of sensor networks to enableapplications that connect the physical world to the virtual world. At the same time there isa need to develop a standard which can make all the sensors to work together withoutmuch of human involvement and customization. The same software should be able towork with sensors from different manufacturers. This is the reason the IEEE has defineda 1451.5 standard for smart sensors with a wireless interface.The 1451.5 standard provides a single generic wireless interface between atransducer and external network, independent of the network protocol in use. Thephysical layer of this standard can use bluetooth, Wi-Fi or ZigBee. In the current workprototype of 1451.5 standard, uses ZigBee as its underlying physical layer. ZigBee is alow cost, low power, open global standard for reliable, cost-effective, low power wirelessapplications based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The goal of this project is to develop aprototype of 1451.5 based TIM and NCAP with the following specifications:Built-in sensors (Temperature, Illumination, Relative Humidity)Wireless (RF) with range of 10 Meters minStandard protocol & ID (IEEE 1451.5)Self-organizing network (Zigbee)Long battery lifeFull-feature graphics at final readoutSmall sizeAll of the specifications have been achieved with the Freescale ZigbeeDemonstration kit. Required sensors have been connected to the prototype board, TEDSaccording to 1451.5 standard has been formed and the,.............-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
