Abstract : Growing demand for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services has motivated thesolution providers to look for technologies that provide better, more manageable andefficient d elivery o f v oice traffic. M ulti-Protocol Label S witching ( MPLS) i s one suchtechnology. Voice over Internet Protocol over Multi-Protocol Label Switching(VoIPoMPLS) is a relatively new idea in facilitating voice traffic between accessnetworks over an MPLS backbone as opposed to VoIP that uses the best-effort Internetfor transporting voice traffic. An MPLS network provides comprehensive options forQuality of Service (QoS) and signaling of voice traffic compared to Frame Relay and IPnetworks. IP is a major competitor of MPLS in the access networks as voice may alreadybe in IP packets when it reaches the Integrated Access Device. In this thesis we show thebenefit provided by an MPLS Network over an IP Network in terms of delay, jitter,throughput and other performance metrics like CPU utilization, virtual memory andintermptslsec for voice traffic.,.............-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
