Abstract : In this thesis, we present a feasibility study on a novel automated algorithmof vertebra segmentation and quantification using whole spine MR images. Thisalgorithm contains two major steps: the intervertebral disk localization step, and thevertebra detection and segmentation step. In the first step, we apply a model-basedsearching method and a novel profiling apprach to approximately locate all theintervertebral disks between adjacent vertebrae. Template-matching and Cannyedgingare used afterwards for their final detections. Based on these disksبinformation obtained in the first step, vertebra centers are detected, and initialboundaries are extracted in the second step.
