Abstract	:	This thesis presents the application of the Particle Swarm Optimization techniq ueto several power systems engineering problems. In particular, the Unit Commitment,Reactive Power Dispatch, State Estimation, and Power System Restoration problemshave been addressed in this work. These optimization problems come from two mainareas within power systems engineering: Operations Planning andGeneration/Transmission Operation. The problems considered in this work had not beenpreviously addressed using the Particle Swarm Optimization technique. Therefore, thework presented in this thesis represents a major contribution to the application of modernheuristic techniques in the power systems engineering area. All problems considered inthis work were properly formulated as nonlinear optimization problems subject to theapplicable constraints. The proposed solution methodologies were validated and testedusing well known and/or standard test systems.
