Abstract : Commercial reduced instruction set computing (RISC) microprocessors areappearing in military and space designs because they have many favorableattributes. RlSC processors are immensely complex devices containing millionsof logic gates and internal storage elements such as registers and cachememory. These storage elements are susceptible to ionizing radiation in earthorbit. Energetic protons and heavy ions may upset data in these storageelements or may cause destructive component failures such as latch-up. Thethesis presents radiation test data for the Motorola XPC7455 RlSCmicroprocessor. The thesis identifies sources of experimental error andcompares methods of predicting the processor's reliability in Earth orbit. Thethesis presents a sensitivity analysis that considers variations in radiationshielding, sensitive volume geometry, orbit parameters and space weatherenvironment.
