Abstract : This research work addresses the simdation of bleeding and other visual effects forvirtual reality (VR) based surgical trainers. VR-based systems have been proposed forsurgicd training bllowing their huge success in Bight simulation. Visual effects such asbleeding increase the visual realism of such simulators. The bleeding simulator developedhere at UT Arlington is a part of the laparoscopic inguinal hernia simulator developed forUTSWMC I. Since the anatomy of the inguinal region is very complex with vital organs,vessels and nerves, bleeding simulation is prurticuIarIy important to train the surgeonsfrom making a surgical error in that region. Hence, they also have the potential toincrease the effectiveness of the training. Previous research work in bleeding simulationare very elementary, though an in depth research has been done in the area of redisticfluid simulation. We have developed a physicsbased approach for the simulation of'University of Texas Southwestern Medid Center, Ddas, TX........-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
