Abstract : The rich information found in multispectral images is in a form that is difficult for interpretationby scientists. Image data fusion techniques rrre useful to systemize the complex information in order tofacilitate image enhancement, feature recognition, and classification. This thesis reports the investigation ofthe performance of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based upon covariance and correlation matricesbetween spectral bands. The approach was to process an image data set using unstandardized PCA(covariance) and then to repeat the processing using standardized PCA (correlation),The data set used inthis investigation was obtained from a spatial imaging radiometer that was part of the Spatial InfraredImaging Telescope (SPIRIT XII) flown aboard the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite.
