Abstract : An abstract of the dissertation of Aydm iucer Karqllayan for the Doctor of Philos-ophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering presented January 6, 2000.Title: Automatic Tuning of High-Q Filters Based on Envelope DetectionAn automatic mixed-mode tuning scheme suitable for analog filters with largequality factors and very high operating frequencies is presented. The highest fre-quency of operation is determined by two envelope detectors which do not needto be accurate as long as they are matched. Beyond the envelope detectors, thetuning operation uses only DC values and low-frequency logic signals. The tun-ing scheme assumes that the filter's quality factor, Q, is large enough so that thetransfer function magnitude has a peak. Systematic tuning errors become smallerwith increasing Q. The tuning circuitry is small and simple so that the area andpower overhead required for tuning is minimized. The operation of the tuningcircuit is insensitive to amplifier delays and offsets.
