Abstract : Previous qualitative studies have shown that SQUID magnetometers have thesensitivity to detect non-invasively the magnetic fieId associated with corrosion currents invarious metal-acid and metal-salt en~ironrnents.~~' These studies were done using strongcorrosive solutions to produce high rates of corrosion and focused primarily on geometrieswhich were intended to maximize the magnetic field generated by corrosion and to simplifyits interpretation. Nevertheless, they presaged the possibility of the use of SQUIDs For non-invasive studies of hidden corrosion. Other studies have demonstrated the possibility ofusing SQUIDs for cyclic vo~tametry,~ and for evaluating electrochernicd reactivity ofmaterials, such as 304 stainless steel.' The first SQUID magnetometer specifically designedfor corrosion studies was constructed by Quantum Magnetics (San Diego, Ca) with a spatialresolution of the order of 1 mm and sensitivity of 3 p ~ / ~ z ' R (at 1 The system wasoperated in a non-shielded laboratory environment and was equipped with a non-magneticstage and computer control. A unique feature of this system was that the detection coil arraywas oriented at 45O with respect to the dewar axis, and the dewar was mounted at a 45" angleupon a cradle.
