Abstract : Anisotropic cuprates La&u3MoO12 and La3Cu2VOg crystallize in homeotypes ofthe YA103 structure with ordered transition metal cations that create a four times largermonoclinic supercell (P = 90) in the former, and a thirteen times larger hexagonalsupercell in the latter- The magnetism of both exhibits distinct paramagnetic regimesowing to geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-coupling. Ln12Ln\Cu3MoOlz-will form an analogous structure if r: i r = 104 pm and A rL: < 14 pm.-(Ln'/Ln11)3CuzV09 will form if rz > r: = 110 pm.The phases with larger lanthanides ions are under-coordinated, but form in theproximity of an "umbrella" stoichiometry that promotes the formation of unconventionalstructures and complex compositions by destabilizing multiphase alternatives.
