Abstract : This dissertation has been focusing on automated analysis of power quality data andtransmission line fault location. New contributions for automatic detection, classificationand characterization of power quality disturbances, equipment sensitivity study duringpower quality disturbances, worst case capacitor switching transients determination aswell as transmission line fault location have been achieved. Intelligent techniques suchas the expert system, fuzzy logic, neural networks. genetic algorithms as well asadvanced signal processing techniques like the wavelet analysis have been investigatedand utilized for fulfilling the objectives.For power quality disturbance detection and classification, we have establishedan innovative fuzzy expert system based decision making system, and extracted uniquefeatures utilizing both the Fourier and wavelet analysis.To characterize power quality disturbances, various pertinent parameters fordescribing specific types of disturbances have been defined, and appropriate algorithmsfor deriving them have been developed.......-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
