Abstract : The present thesis relates the design, fabrication, and testing of aunique type of silicon-based, miniature fuel cell. Tne fuel cell electrodes wereconstructed using standard silicon micro-fabrication techniques, and wereused to construct miniature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) usingNafion'. During testing, methanol and oxygen were the cormnon reactants,but hydrogen and oxygen could be used as well. A novel form of anelectrodeposited Pt: Ru alloy was developed for use as a methanol electro-oxidation catalyst in the mini-PEFCs. An optimized mini-PEFC design wasdeveloped, tested, and compared with large PEFCs on the basis ofperformance. Mini-PEFC performance was equivalent to that of large PEFCswhen scaled for active-area, but was limited bv the function of the oxygenelectrode. The rate of methanol crossover in a methanol/oxygen mini-PEFCwas predicted using Fick's first law and the electrode chip feed-hole area.
