Abstract : Model-based image analysis is a relatively new: but increasingly popular andwidely successful, approach to analysis of object shape in images. The approachrequires a physically-based model for the image data, a model that can be quite simplefor MR and CT images. Existing applications for ultrasonic images employ datamodels using assumptions that significantly limit the general applicability of theirresults. Towards a data model that more fundamentally represents ultrasonic imagesin terms of shape, a probabilistic data model has been developed for ultrasonic imagesof rough surfaces combining surface shape and microstructure and the characteristicsof the imaging system.
