Abstract : This thesis is concerned with developing totally adaptive signal processing approaches forincreasing the storage capacity of disk drives. Most of the last decade has seen a 60 per yearincrease in the areal recording density of hard disks. Although the increase has been largely due toimprovements in recording heads, magnetic media and mechanical devices, a substantial increasehas also been due to the use of more sophisticated signal processing techniques, Partial ResponseMaximum Likelihood (PRML) in particular. The continuing increase in recording density is result-ing in progressively lower Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) regimes that is making it increasingly dif-ficult for signal processing methods based on equalization (PRML, for example) to be effective. These circumstances have recently motivated much research activity into the use of coding strate-gies to increase the effective SNR of the magnetic recording channel. Turbo codes and iterativeencoding/decoding. in particular. have attracted much attention. Although these methods havebeen shown to yield dramatic performance improvements. many important implementation issuesmust be resolved before turbo coding schemes are able to meet the stringent speed and power dis-sipation constraints of the magnetic recording channel. For this reason, this thesis focuses ondeveloping feasibly implementable signal processing approaches, based on equalization and Vit-erbi detection, that can be realized in the near term to exploit the available SNR. Note that antici-pated advances in coding and implementation will not render this work obsolete......-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
