Abstract : This thesis is concerning the new analysis and design of coefficient restorationin the application of transform Image coding.DC coefficient restoration (DCCR) is a technique to reduce the encodinginformation in block transform image coding- It also suppresses the blockingartifacts that exist in the images coded by block transform coding a t low bitrates. The basic principle of DCCR is that most of the DC coefficients in blocktransform image can be restored from the AC coefficients. The restoration isbased on the criterion called minimum edge difference (MED). It is according tothe assumption that most of the pixel value variations across the block bound-aries are smooth. DCCR can make a significant portion of DC coefficients notto be coded in transform image coding and reduce the overall coding bit rate.A s a result. the decoded images have better visual quaIity and higher PSSRsthan those by the conventiond block transform coding.In t h e analysis part. we use a stochastic Markov random field image model.....-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
