Abstract : In 1990 Sony changed forever the portable power supply industry with theintroduction of the first commercially successfbl secondary lithium ion battery. The newSony cell was able to store twice the energy per unit mass as compared to the conventionalsystems and exhibited a voitage in excess of three volts. The battery industry was confkontedwith competition for the workhorse nickel-cadmium system.
