Abstract : In packetswitching networks, end-bend delay is an important measurementof network performance. Delay characterization plays an important role in protocoldesigns, real-time applications and network monitoring and diagnoses. The dynam-ics of end-to-end delays in wired networks is dominantly determined by queueingdelays. Recent studies on network tr&c demonstrated that long-range dependence(LRD) is an ubiquitous property of traffic both in local area networks and wide areanetworks, suggesting modem data networks are no longer Markovian queueing net-works. Conventional queueing analyses and conclusions need a review. Developingnew tools to characterize queueing behavior when facing complicated traffic modelsand new transport control mechanisms with feedback-based flow control strategies,is very meaningful to both theory and practice. The work presented in this thesisis one effort in this direction.By characterizing network delays as a multi-structure process, we develop ageneric modeling framework for delay phenomena dominated by queueing process.Being called Multi-structure implies that a densely measured delay sequence is sta-tionary as a whole but non-stationary locally in a small.....-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
