Abstract : First-principles mathematical models were developed to examine the effect of thelithium-lithium ion interactions inside the anode particles on the performance of a lithiumfoil cell. Two different models were developed: the chemical potential model (CPM) thatincludes the lithium-lithium ion interactions inside the anode particles and the diffusionmodel (DFM) that does not include the interactions. Significant differences in thethermal and electrochemical performance of the cell were observed between the twoapproaches. The temperature of the cell predicted by the DFM is higher than the onepredicted by the CPM at a given capacity. The discharge time of the cell predicted by theDFM is shorter than the one predicted by the CPM.
