Abstract : The petro-chemical industry is characterized as having very dynamic and unpre-dic table marketplace conditions. The design of advanced control systems for chemicalprocesses is quite a challenging task since it requires the satisfaction of many physicalconstraints on the values of the controlled variables. Conventional control theory isnot capable of incorporating such constraints directly into the control system design.Instead, constraints are handled in a mostly ad hoc fashion, once the design has beencarried out. h o t her important characteristic of conventional automatic control the-ory is that a considerable amount of effort is expended in first stabilizing an openloop unstable plant. However, for most process control applications, the plant isalready open loop stable to start with thereby making the initial stabilization stepunnccessq.
