Abstract : Since their discovery several decades agoy relaxor ferroelectrics (RFE)(I-x)Pb(MglnNbuJ)03-xPbTi03 (PMN-PT), engineered near the morphotropic phaseboundary (x = 0.3), have raised tremendous interest in the ferroelectric community, dueto their broad ferroelectric transition, enormous dielectric constant, high piezoelectriccoefficients and exceptional electromechanical coupling factors. However, theseattractive qua1 i ties were demonstrated mainly by PMN-PT single crystals and ceramicsand scarcely at all by PMN-PT thin films. This thesis addresses critical issues of thepulsed laser deposition growth of high quality epitaxial 0.70PMN-0.30PT thin films andheterostructures, for potential ferroelectric and piezoelectric thin film applications.A review of relaxor ferroelectrics in terms of general characteristics,crystallographic structure, models and synthesis with a special emphasis on O.7OPMN-....-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
