Abstract : This dissertation extends coopentive caching systems in three new directions: ( 1 ) I study theperformance trideoffs of using load balancing techniques to reduce the contention of remote pagerequests at memory servers. (2) 1 develop 11 novel combined prefetching and cooperative cachingsystem to further reduce disk stall time for UO-bound applications. and (3) I explore the effectivenessof using cooperative caching techniques among World Wide Web pmxy caches at large-scale clientpopulations. I use analytic. simulation. and measurement techniques to explore the performance ofthese new directions in cooperative caching systems.First. I develop an analytic queueing network model to evaluate the effectiveness of load bdmc-ing memory requests. and then use trice-driven simulation to study the potential hann of deviatingfrom the replacement policy when balancing load. I find that deviating from the strict replacementpolicy does not significantly degrade overall application performonce.
