Abstract	:	The SNO project was to develop a flexi'bk exploratory tool that could be used to look atseveral evolutionary and leamiag processcs. It could be adapted to study many otherprocesses It operates at a very low kvel of complexity compared to real Life (as do all A1and rU, computer simulations) a d therefore the word intelligence will have connotationsthat are well outside the scope of the model. However, artificial neural net based systemsand genetic algorithms that use or pdorm pattern recognition are very likely the bask ofmany higher level systems that can be clearly categotized as intelligent. Perhaps the termadaptive behavior would be less controversial but it would also be less descriptive of thistype of learning process. The model is used to investigate the growth of patternrecognition, a significant aspect of intelligence, in an artificial mural network. The typicalevaluation method for neural networks is to apply a calculation based on error h m aknown standard to select the best network.
