Abstract	:	ZEANG, LJBDCN. Human bronchial epithelial cells produce heparin-binding epidermalgrowth factor-like growth factor: a principle mitogen for human lung fibroblasts in vttm.under normal conditions and after metal injury. (Under the direction of Dr. Kenneth B.Mler. )The project described in this dissertation investigates a putative role for humanairway epithelium in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis by investigating growthfactor production by airway epithelial cells under normal conditions and after exposure tovanadium, a fibrogenic metal. We observed that conditioned medium (CM) from normalhuman bronchial epithelial cells (NHBECs) possesses mitogenic activity for human lungfibroblasts (HLF).
