Abstract : This thesis presents an integrated approach towards understanding grain boundaryelectrical properties in electroceramics by examining the effects of doping and annealingconditions on macroscopic electrical measurements, nanoscale potentials, and defectdistributions at grain boundaries. The varistor behavior of a model electroceramicsystem, bicrystals of Nb bulk doped SrTiO;, has been investigated as a basis forcorrelating p i n boundary properties through a simplified microstructure.Although these bicrystals only have a single grain boundary, AC and DCelectrical measurements have revealed a four order of magnitude increase in resistancefor the isolated grain boundary.
