Abstract : A circular array of N identid Josephson junctions with nearest neighbor couplingis studied. Previous studies on this system, both experimental and theoretical,have shown that certain features in the current (I)-voltage (V) curve associatedwith such an array are consequences of a symmetry-breaking period-doubling in-stability of a synchronous periodic state. This loss of stability is manifest as gapsin an otherwise continuous IV curve. At one edge of the gap, there is often asteep rise, or step, in the IV curve which is consistent with a bifurcation to astable period-doubled state. Correspondingly, when there are no stable, small am-plitude branches associated with the bifurcation there should not be a continuoustransition from the synchronous state to the step.The inst abilities of the synchronous periodic state are investigated usingthe tools of equivariant bifurcation theory. In doing so, the symmetry of thephysical system is used to determine the form of the equations governing theperiod-doubling bifurcation. Existence and stability of the period-doubled soh tionstates are determined as a function of coefficients of certain nonlinear terms in thebifurcation equations for general N . For the specific cases of N = 4,5, and 9, thepossible qualitatively different bifurcation scenarios are determined as a furctionof system parameters and then translated into information about IV curves for arange of parameter space.For N = 4, the solution states which make up a step in an IV curve....-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
