Abstract : A description of the micromagnetic theory, algorithms, computer soft-ware and computer hardware built and used to study particulate media particles,hysteresis and recording is first provided. This includes a derivation and analysisof the modified version of the Fast Multipole Method used in this dissertation.Results will then be presented on particulate media particle nucleation field de-pendence on particle shape, particle aspect ratio, ferromagnetic exchange energyand external magnetic field angle. Results on the discretization necessary to accu-rately model a particle will also be provided. The reversal mode of a particle willbe simulated and analyzed. Simulated longitudinal and transverse hysteresis loopswill be presented. Results will also be presented on particulate media coercivityand squareness dependence on volumetric packing fraction. Simulated recordedtransition results will be given as well as total power spectra results for AC andDC erased particulate media. Numerical results will be compared to experimen-tal data and analytical theories.
