Abstract : Current longitudinal thin-film media in magnetic hard-disk drives are facing an on-coming limit caused by the superparamagnetic effect, in which the individual grainsin the medium become so small that they are no longer stable against thermal Buc-tuation. This situation is undesirable as the stored information may be lost withinan unexpectedly short time frame. There have been several proposed solutions inaddressing thc superparamagnetic limit. and one of them is perpendicular patternedmedia. In this approach, a periodic array of magnetic pillars is defined lithographi-cally on a non-magnetic substrate. Binary data of "1" or *iO'' can be stored in eachof these elements. which have two possible magnetization directions perpendicular tothe plane of the medium.In our perpendicular patterned media design, Xi columns of 150-230nm diameterwith a 6:1 aspect ratio are embedded in an (A1Ga)203/GaAs substrate. The fabrica-tion procedure uses a combination of high resolution electron beam lithography. dryetching. and electroplating.
