Abstract : Graphite is favored as the anode material for Li-ion batteries because it exhibits ahigh specific capacity, a most desirable charge potential profile, and superior cyclingbehavior. However, the irreversible reactions during the first discharge cycle, whichleads to a capacity loss, a decreased cell energy density and a serious safety problem, hasbeen a very persistent problem associated with the use of graphite. In this dissertation, asurface modification approach is fmt proposed and utilized to reduce the irreversiblecapacity and to improve the charge-discharge performance of graphite in propy knecarbonate-based electrolyte. This surface modification approach is developed bymicroencapsulation of graphites with nano-sized metal particles (nickel or palladium).Physical and electrochemical characterizations of these synthesized graphite materidshave been done in depth in order to investigate the effects of the metal coating on thecharge-discharge performance and self-discharge performance of graphite and toelucidate the mechanisms for reducing the irreversible capacity by applying metalcoatings.
