Abstract : The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell (or PEWC) is attracting muchattention as a power source of electric vehicles due to its high power density capability.It is well known that the hydration-state of the membrane is critical to the optimumperformance. If the membrane is too dry, its conductivity drops resulting in reducedperformance and if there is an excess of water, the reaction sites are blocked and theperformance also decreases. This dissertation presents experimental data that may beused to verify numerical simulations of the optimum performance of a PEMFC iesultingfrom hydration effects. The key to this usefulness is the closure (typically to within 10 )of water balances on each side of the PEM for various operating conditions. The closureresults from data that quantifies the extent to which the idet gas streams are not fullysaturated with water vapor.
