Abstract	:	Distribritecl Video-on-Deniancl (VoD) systems are espectecl to be one of the mostimportant services supported by the nest generation of high-speed networks. videoservers. and clistribtitecl multimedia file systerns. Using n clist ributed VoD system. aclient can rcqucst a vicleo from anywhere and at any time. In response to a client'sreqtlest. VoD s~~stenls deliver high quality digitized vicleo directly to client set-topboxes. A typical VoD architecture consists of three subsystenls: storage. network. andclient. .-\rlr~iission control tests are employecl on all subsystems before a t h i t t i n g a newrequest to check whether resources are available to provide guaranteed service. Thisarchitecttiral approach represents a dramatic break from a best-effort environment.From a research point of view. VoD systems pose great challenges in the areas ofretrieval and delivery for real-time performance.
