Abstract : This work presents the application of the Gray-Box modeling method in electric drives.In gray-box modeling, the system model is partitioned into known and unknown com-ponents. The known component of the model is derived fiom physical principles whilethe unlmown part is modeled using a black-box model. The advantage of this method isthat it does not need all the information that is required to develop completely analyticmodels.In the case of electric drives, the electric part of the system is well understood fromthe corresponding governing physical laws, while the model of the mechanical componentof the system could be too complex to derive a reliable physical model of the system. Inthis work, neural networks are used as black-box models for the mechanical component.This methodology is applied in three case studies of modeling of a permanent magnetDC motor drive system driving three different mechanical Ioads.From the results of this work, it has been determined that the Gray-Box model-ing method is a technique with many advantages when it comes to modeling complexnonlinear systems.
