Abstract	:	An electrolyzer/fuel cell energy storage system is a promising alternative tobatteries For storing energy from solar electric power systems. Such a system wasdesigned in cooperation with Electrochem. Inc., to include a proton-exchange mern brane(PEM) electrol yzer, high-pressure hydrogen and oxygen storage tanks. and a PEM fuelcell. The system operates in a closed water loop. A prototype system Lvas constructed.including an experimental PEM electrol yzer and combined gashater storage tanks.Testing goals included general system feasibiiity. characterization of the clecrrolyzerperformance. performance of the clectrolyzer as a compressor. and evaluation of thesystem for direct-coupled use with a photovoltaic (PV) array.
