Abstract : This thesis is a study of locally manufactured lead-acid batteries used in stand alone homephotovoltaic (SAHPV) systems in the Dominican Republic. Data on battery voltage, current, and temperature as well as cell voltage and specific gravity was collected on batteries operatingin such systems. All batteries exhibited signs of overcharge and were found to have spentsignificant time discharging or idling in a state of discharge. Several batteries had evidence ofundercharge or over discharge. Charge and discharge currents were moderate, electrolytespecific gravity was low to moderate. During peak charging, battery temperatures rose 9 to20پ‍-C above the optimal operating temperature (2jپ‍-C). Examination of worn out batteries fromSAHPV systems revealed that most had signs of sulfation and/or severely deteriorated positiveplates and several had indications of gassing and spalling. An accelerated cycling test wasdesigned to investigate the effects of temperature during charging on battery performance andthe effectiveness of tetrasodium ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (Na4EDTA) in revitalizingworn out batteries. No relation was found between the temperature during charging, the totalcharge output of the battery, or cycle life. However, at the higher temperature there was agreater difference between the total charge input to the battery and the total charge output. Theaddition of Na4EDTA to worn out cells did not improve battery capacity or increase cycle life.....-....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
