Abstract : The goal was to develop a detection algorithm for a microbial detection instrumentthat would, among other things, successfully distinguish between live and dead bacterialcells, bacterial spores, bacterial media, and minimal medialwater, with high detectionrates and low false alarm rates. It was desired that this occur in real time without anysample contact. One aim was to develop a protocol to transmit data between theinstrument and a PC over a potential lossy channel.
