Abstract : Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by a closure of the upper airway duringsleep. The most common and safest treatment for OSA is through a continuous positiveairway pressure (CPAP) machine. An automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) machine isan intelligent CPAP machine. APAP adjusts the pressure depending on the patient's needduring sleep. The objective for this study was to develop a fiuzy inference algorithm (FIA)for an APAP machine. It would use funy logic to detect an apnea event by analyzing theairflow signal in consecutive 3-second intervals. The parameters measured in the 3-secondintervals were the normalized area and standard deviation of baseline adjusted and rectifiedairflow signal. This normalized area and standard deviation were the inputs to the FIA. TheFIA then went through fuzzification, rule evaluation and defbzzification to obtain theoutputs. Apnea was determined when these outputs were in a specific range.
