Abstract	:	This thesis demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used formusicological research. The two main paradigms of -41, symbolic and connectionist,are examined for their possible applications in the field of musicology. In the case ofexpert systems, an extensive survey of knowledge-representation formalisms is given.Hybrid systems, which combine symbolic and connectionist approaches along withfuzzy logic, are also discussed.For the most part, A1 has been embraced by composers and theorists. Thisdoes not mean that A1 is my less usell in the field of musicology; it just has not beenexplored to the same extent.
