Abstract	:	An o v e ~ e w of existing techniques for the design of long and fast counters revdsseveral methods closely related to the design of fast adders, as well as some techniquesthat are only valid for counter design. This thesis proposes novel design for up/downcounter, which uses a shadow register when the counter changes its direction. Instead ofcalculating the next value when the counter changes its direction the output register isloaded with the value b m the shadow register. The thesis also compares frequency ofthe conventional 8-bit ripple carry up counter, 8-bit prescded counter and constant-time&bit up counter.
